Unconventional

Well, anyone who knows Aaron or I know that we tend to do things rather—er—unconventionally. Hence the reason we just showed up at work one day engaged; and the reason we moved to Fargo, North Dakota without ever having seen the place; and the reason we do lots of other things that leave people scratching their heads and looking feverishly for the number of the local loony farm.
Our latest adventure in unconventionality has to do with the baby. You see, since I’ve never been a mom before, I’ve been doing a lot of research about stuff—like what brands of car seats are better, and how soon to start feeding baby solid foods, and stuff like that. In my research, I ran across an article that told me how much I was going to spend on diapers during the life of my un-potty-trained child. I gasped in horror. So I started researching diapers. You know what I discovered? I discovered this thing called “cloth diapers." Yeah, you see, they’re made of fabric, so instead of throwing them away, you wash them and put them back on baby. It’s cheaper that way.
And you can just keep all your snide little comments about how icky cloth diapers are all to yourself because I haven’t yet had to kneel in front of a toilet and dunk a dozen dirty diapers (that sounds like a movie title, doesn’t it?), so I’m still excited about them. Besides that, my mom has graciously volunteered to do slave labor for me and actually hand make baby’s diapers for me. She sent me the pilot series last week, and they turned out so cute, that I thought I’d share a picture with you. Of course, they’ve got some tweaking yet as far as sizing goes, and I didn’t have a baby, so my childhood teddy bear has volunteered to model the diaper for your viewing pleasure, but all in all, I’m looking forward to cloth diapering. At least until I have to dunk for the first time.

There are some who would probably tend to lean more toward “insaner" than “braver." I like “braver" better, though, so I thank you for that.

Excellent idea. There was much money spent on my brother, just on diapers, and he was allergic to the cheaper ones (just our luck, right?).

Unlike like the throw away diapers, cloth diapers breathe and are better for the baby’s bottom in the long run… more work for mom but best for baby. I remember when your mom made cloth diapers for you, Kari… infact , I believe I still have the “proto type" she sent me when I was fostering kids in the late 80's.

Hi Dianna! Yeah, Mom let me in on my secret past after I told her I was going to use cloth for the baby. That’s how she got elected (by a popular vote of 1) to make them for her grandson—because she knows how! :)

Kari, there is something called diaper liners that are very inexpensive and disposable. They go inside cloth diapers. They are great when babies are just messy and not wet. Just take the diaper liner out of the diaper and throw it away. The diaper is still good til it’s wet.
We used these with our kids when they were babies. (No disposable diapers then that we could afford.) It was worth that little extra money without going deep in debt for disposable diapers.

I was reading about those on one of the cloth diapering sites (can you believe they entire websites devoted to cloth diapering?!). I’ve been looking around for them, but so far, I can only find them online. I may have to break down and just spring for the shipping costs (I hate paying shipping:)) if I can’t find them anywhere else.
